Institute
The Institute of German as a Foreign Language belongs to the Faculty of Modern Languages. Located in the heart of Heidelberg's old town, we see ourselves as an institute with a special cultural and political mission: we train international and German students who aspire to teach German language, literature, and culture at the international and national level.
Our institute has three professorships. We employ around 20 full-time staff in research and administration, as well as numerous student assistants. Around 500 students are currently enrolled in our degree programs.
Our building has a remarkable history. It was built in 1855 as a laboratory for the chemist Wilhelm Robert Bunsen (1811-1899) and was the most modern chemical research facility in Europe at the time. In 2011, it was designated a historic site of chemistry by the German Chemical Society.
