Institute
The Institute of German as a Foreign Language (IDF) is part of the Faculty of Modern Languages and sees itself as an institute with a special cultural and political mission: we train foreign and German students who aspire to teach German language, literature, and culture at the international and national level. Our institute is therefore characterized by a high degree of internationality.

Teaching
The Institute of German as a Foreign Language offers study opportunities in the areas of German as a foreign language, German as a second language, and intercultural German studies. Our range of courses is complemented by international exchange programs and a part-time option to help you balance your studies, career, and family life.

Library
The library at the Institute of German as a Foreign Language offers a wide range of specialist literature on linguistics and literary studies, as well as a special collection of exercise and textbook material on teaching German as a foreign language. The library is physically and organizationally linked to the library of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting.

Research
The Institute of German as a Foreign Language focuses its research on multilingualism, language acquisition, language and cognition, and comparative and intercultural literary studies. Research at the IDF is interdisciplinary and closely linked to teaching.

Transfer
Heidelberg University supports transfer activities and the further development of future-oriented ideas. The primary goal is to enable society to participate more fully in scientifically generated knowledge. The IDF implements this transfer service in areas such as language promotion and teaching, continuing education programs, and high-profile projects.
